Various Livejournal Posts From 2004-2008
Come for the embarrassing overreactions to Harry Potter, stay for the casual sexism and body shaming.
Earlier this week I was invited by my friend Paris, the brains behind the newsletter Mental Health, to share some writing from my childhood for a reading series they host called Welcome to My Twisted Mind. I decided to scrounge up some select Livejournal posts, and while I was browsing through my old blog, I was a little taken aback by how politically incorrect I was. I mean, I was no bigot by any means, but it’s fascinating to look back at ways—big and small—that casual sexism, sizeism, and even internalized racism impacted how I viewed the world and what I was comfortable sharing with others. In other words, I was a product of my time (the 2000s).
I was also a judgmental bitch. Which I still am, but not. early as bad
I’m glad I wrote this nonsense before everything we write online was subject to public consumption. I would have been canceled ten times over.
I read most of these aloud for all who came to the event (to big laughs, mind you, so at least it’s not just me who finds these funny now), but a few of them didn’t make the cut due to time constraints. So here they all are, wrapped in a nice little newsletter just for you. Enjoy!
A few notes before we start:
I was born on November 14, 1990. The earliest of these posts was written when I was 13, the oldest when I was 17.
The first post is actually included in a live reading for paid subscribers. Check it out here if you haven’t already.
Many of these entries are snippets taken from larger posts. I cannot believe how much I’d write about a boring day at school.
Teenagers are stupid. Here I am, owning just a sliver of my stupid.
